Magic Moments

President Peter welcomes me to Nottingham Rotary Club
President Peter Lewis of Nottingham Rotary Club invited me along to launch his presidential year at their first meeting of the Rotary year on Monday 2nd July at the Crown Plaza, Hotel.

Opening the evening to partners, I was to entertain them by performing a selection of conjuring illusions.

Mother Club

Sidney S Rhodes, 1st President of Hucknall
Nottingham Rotary Club is my club’s mother club.  This means that they helped found the Rotary Club of Hucknall.  Early in 1926 and acting independently of each other, two Hucknall businessmen wrote to Nottingham Rotary Club wishing to join their club because they were drawn to the ideals of the Rotary movement.  Mr Charles Lymm came to visit and interview the two Hucknallites, Messrs. Sidney S. Rhodes and Henry Morley.

Henry Morley, 2nd president of Hucknall

He then encouraged and advised them on how to form a Rotary Club with the inaugural meeting of the Rotary Club of Huckall taking place on Tuesday 2nd March 1926 with 21 new members and 18 visitors supporting them.

The Visit

I was hosted by PP Tony Poulter who didn’t hold my revelation of being a former banker against me!  Light hearted conversation took place over the gigantic trophy that Nottingham Club had received the day before at the District Governor’s Handover Luncheon.

This Trophy was awarded for the Best Community Project and was in recognition of the sterling work being done in partnership with the City Council to facilitate and encourage children in the City to start reading at an earlier age via the Dolly Parton Imagination Library Scheme. This provides a book each month free from birth until their fifth birthday. By the age of 5, each child will have received up to 60 books in total.

Working with a range of partners including the council, Nottingham Rotary have raised over £38,000 to fund the first scheme in Bilborough which will see all babies born between 1st January 2012 to 31st December 2012 offered enrolment on the scheme.

To support or get more information on this scheme contact Leni Gelblum at elgee@betos.co.uk

Despite requests, I didn’t attempt to ‘vanish’ the trophy, however during the course of the evening, the Presidential Chain of Office disappeared.  At the end of the evening, one or two members were most anxious that the chain had been returned to President Peter!
